Before I moved into journalism, I spent 25 years in the motor industry, buying and selling cars for trade and retail. The ten years from 2000-2010 were spent as a car values editor for Glass’s Guide in the UK, watching the used car market and reporting older car and modern classic values, for the motor trade and the financial services industry.

From my experience, I can say that market valuation insurance policies on classic cars are the wrong way to go. If your classic Porsche in impeccable condition is stolen or written off tomorrow, market value is the wrong place to start.

Picture a space where your spotless classic Porsche used to be, and imagine trying to agree an insurance value for your long-gone pride and joy. Anyone happy using £8,000 sheds as a barometer for their £25,000-to-replace 3.2 Carrera or something seriously specialist will be in trouble!
